The Austin Restaurant Hop Part 1:
Authentic New York Pizza By The Slice
Dined in April 2015

My Daughter had just arrived in town, so from the Austin Airport, we drove to south Austin to meet my girlfriend at Home Slice, one of an endless stream of restaurants going up and down South Congress Avenue, where from the movie Chef, you see the restaurant in the backdrop. Home Slice would be part of a restaurant hop that day which would also include Güero's Taco Bar and Perla’s Seafood and Oyster Bar.

Meet the owners.
What is New York-style Pizza?
NY-style pizza has a crisp, stone-baked Neapolitan crust (as in from Naples, Italy), slices so large it’s de rigueur to fold them down the middle to eat, and a variety of authentic toppings adapted from the kitchens of Italian grandmothers everywhere.
Still not sure what makes pizza NY-style? Here’s a quick lesson:
A cheese pizza with fried eggplant slices on top IS NY-style.
A classic “white” pie with ricotta and olive oil IS NY-style.
A flabby pepperoni and mush (room) delivered by [insert favorite chain here] is NOT NY-style.
A wood-fired gourmet extravaganza of lamb, cilantro and chevre may be delicious, but it’s NOT NY-style either.
And barbecue chicken kimchi pizza? We’re not even going to go there...
Get it? Got it? Good.
But even if you don’t give a darn about NY or its pizza, we’re sure you’ll like how Home Slice Pizza tastes!

Main review:

I have never seen an area or neighborhood bustling with so much activity centered around food and entertainment in along time, but that’s Austin. Coming back from the airport, my girlfriend had already arrived at Home Slice and was waiting for an open table to sit at, meanwhile I circled street by street looking for a place to park for over twenty minutes, and this was a weekday for god sake. Once I managed to find a spot, nearly two blocks from Home Slice, we walked up towards Home Slice passing restaurant and small mom and pop businesses on both sides. Once at the door, you could not even move from the crowd of people going in and out, and finally all three of us were able to get a seat opening at the bar.

The kitchen was open air behind the bar where all action took place to make the pizzas, subs, calzones and salads. Above them a large sign saying “in pizza we trust.” We each enjoyed once slice of pizza from Spinach, roasted red pepper, green olives, onions to Sausage, ricotta cheese and roasted red pepper.
After that one slice, we had several other places to go on our Restaurant hop, stopping next at
Perla’s Seafood and Oyster Bar, one block down from Home Slice.

This Restaurant reminds me of:

Home Slice Pizza was a good starter for the night, reminding me of a few other places I had visited over the years where I ate some damn good pizza such as Gino’s Pizzeria in Chicago, Pizza Republica,in Centennial, Colorado, and Base Woodfire Oven in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Other Austin favorites:
Güero's Taco Bar
Perla’s Seafood and Oyster Bar
