Yering Station

Yarra Glen, Australia
Land, Architecture, and Wine
Tasted in March 2015

By Sean Overpeck

Day two of a wine tour of the Yarra Valley was now in full swing with the second tasting of the day at the Yering Station Vineyard. I had just completed an eight month working tour at McMurdo Station, Antarctica, and before returning to the United States, I took a week tour of Eastern Australia, starting in Melbourne and the Yarra Valley.

From vineyards home page:
Yering Station was established in 1838 by the pioneering Ryrie brothers who adopted the Aboriginal name “Yering” for their new station. In 1996 the Rathbone family purchased the property drawn to its natural beauty, history and the great promise of its wines. Today Yering Station is one of the jewels of the Yarra Valley region, attracting tourists and wine enthusiasts from around the globe. Recognised for its landmark winery/restaurant complex, the building sits harmoniously within the landscape of heritage architecture and the beautiful vineyards from which our winemakers craft award winning wines.

Main review:
In the two days of wine tasting in the Yarra Valley, the Yering Station Vineyard was the biggest winery of the six that I visited. There were several buildings on the property with new and exotic forms of architecture, and a beautiful landscape with mix matched modern art pieces scattered around. I went into the first building on the path which had a store, reception area, and a restaurant called  Eleonore's Restaurant @ Chateau Yering.

The second building was the cellar door tasting room, which unlike the first building was older brick laid, that looked similar to an older train station building. Two tasting were offered, a standard and a premier flight. With the tasting options you receive a sampling of vineyard blocks from the Yarrabank, the Village block, the Estate block, and the Reserve block. With my tastings I got one of the Yarrabanks, most of the Estate blocks, and all of the Reserve blocks, and one of the Village blocks.

From these tastings, my personnel favorites were the 2011 Village block chardonnay, the 2010 Yering Station Estate block M.V.R which was a blend of Marsanne, Viognier, and Roussanne, plus the 2012 Reserve block Shiraz Viognier. The fee’s for the tasting are voided if of course you purchase some wine, or sign up for one of their clubs. If you live outside Australia, there are distributors in several countries, and the wine clubs are available to them as well. TheYering Station Estate Club what Club member benefits include:

This or these wines remind me of:
A large estate, modern architecture, and of course the wine. From the tastings and my personal favorites which are highlighted below, I would compare the wines such as the shiraz to a tasting from Sijnn Wines in Stellenbosch, South Africa, and the chardonnay from the Castello di Amorosa winery in Napa, California.

About Sean Overpeck:

I am based out of St. Petersburg, Florida working in the food service industry for the past twenty years, and am currently with the American Embassy as the Executive Chef in Basra, Iraq. Formally I have worked with groups contracting in Afghanistan, Dubai, and Antarctica, also working in restaurants in and around Atlanta prior to the wars. I have also owned a catering company and served proudly in the United States Army food service program. The idea for the Wine, Dine, and Play Blog started in late 2012 after a trip to Jordan, when I was asked by others to write down the experiences from a few Jordanian restaurants, plus the wine from the region that I tasted, and locations of interest such as Petra, and the culture. Since that time, nearly 200 articles have been written on restaurants, including fifteen from the worlds top 100 lists of San Pellegrino and the Elite Travelers Guide; exotic world locations such as Dubai, Petra, and African Safari’s; food recipes & Grand Food Dictionaries; country cuisines such as Afghan and Peruvian; and of course wine from vineyards in California, Oregon, the Carolina’s, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia.
