Wine Dine and Play: Yeoman’s Cask and Lion Pub

Yeoman’s Cask and Lion Pub

Review title
Hip Style British Themed Pub

What do you get when you have a restaurant with old brick walls converted from either an old garage or firehouse with an artist depiction of Winston Churchill as a hippie and a red telephone kiosk box. You have the Yeoman’s Cask and Lion Pub in downtown Tampa where you can get comfort English pub grub with other classics and some American favorites like mac and cheese and hamburgers.

Main review:
My wife and I were downtown finishing up a concert at the Amalie Arena where the Trans-Siberian Orchestra gave one of the best performances of heavy metal mixed with Christmas that I had ever seen. Afterward we walked a few blocks and met my parents at the Yeoman’s where they had been waiting a short time enjoying some drinks. The restaurant was extremely crowded, and the wait for a table was over thirty minutes, which made sense considering the release of the concert and 20,000 people walking around.

Once seated the server was polite and nice, but not very attentive. It took time to get drinks and to place our orders. We started with the macaroni and cheese blended with buffalo chicken as a starter dish, then moved onto the entrees. My stepmother ordered the chicken tikka masala   served with yogurt and spices, in a tomato cream sauce over jasmine rice with broccoli and grilled pita bread.

Other entrees ordered were my wife's order of the Buckingham salad which had mixed lettuce, goat cheese, sourdough croutons, cherry tomatoes, red onions, and cucumber, all tossed together with some creamy Dijon dressing. She also added some blackened shrimp to that order. My father ordered the bangers and mash with sage infused sausage, onion gravy, and peas with carrots for the side. While I had the fish and chips, North-Atlantic cod with house-made tartar sauce, and some coleslaw.

Final notes and observations:
Over all from this experience taking the six factors I use on Wine, Dine, and Play to produce my rating, I give Yeoman’s a 1 out of 5 stars, meaning that they the same as any average dining experience of most restaurants. The six factors used to get this rating include reviewing of their wine selections; overall customer service from host, bar, service, and management; the restaurant ambiance, noise level, lighting, and bathroom quality; plate presentation, which includes garnish, color, and art; quality of the food, where it is produced, and how it is prepared; and finally the “wow” factor. Did the restaurant wow me in any way not listed in the five factors above? Some restaurants do, but most do not.

About Sean:

I am based out of St. Petersburg, Florida working in the food service industry for the past twenty years, and am currently with the American Embassy as the Executive Chef in Basra, Iraq. Formally I have worked with groups contracting in Afghanistan, and Antarctica, also working in restaurants in and around Atlanta, Georgia prior to the wars. I have also owned a catering company and served proudly in the United States Army Food Service Program. The idea for Wine, Dine, and Play started in late 2012 after a trip to Jordan, when I was asked by friends to write down the experiences from a few Jordanian restaurants, wine from the region that I tasted, and locations of interest such as Petra. Since that time, over 250 articles have been written on restaurants, including fifteen from the worlds top 100 lists of San Pellegrino and the Elite Travelers Guide. There are articles on exotic world locations such as Victoria Falls, and South African Safari’s; food recipes & Grand Food Dictionaries; ethnic country cuisines such as Afghan, and Peruvian; tasting tours of world cities like Charleston, Cape Town, and Dubai; and of course wine from vineyards in California, Oregon, the Carolina’s, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia, with much more to see and write about.
