Umi Sushi House Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

According to Food 52, sushi became popular in the United States during the 1960s with the opening of Kawafuku Restaurant in Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo and by the 1980s it was a full-on craze. The city of Cape Coral, Florida, just north of Fort Myers has a population of 183,000 according to the 2017 census. According to Yelp, there are 30+ sushi restaurants in the city, but more than likely there are a few that website missed. Umi Sushi House is one on that and other lists.

According to their website, the Umi Sushi House Restaurant offers authentic and delicious tasting Japanese cuisine. Umi Sushi House also has a convenient location near many other Cape Coral community businesses on Hancock Bridge Parkway. They are also known for the variety and high-quality fresh ingredients. They are located in a small space attached to a Publix Supermarket and the Hana Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi lounge a few hundred yards away. Even with this bigger restaurant giving Umi direct competition, they are holding their own. Other restaurant neighbors attached to the same shopping center include a rib shack and Cuban restaurant. The outside may not immediately catch your attention but you have sat down to enjoy the food and friendly atmosphere, it is worth it.

We came in after the lunch rush, so we had the small dining room to ourselves. The staff was just finishing cleaning the tables from the crowd that departed. The menu was very extensive with several offerings from each category. Once we placed our order, we shared a miso soup that tasted like most others you get in Japanese restaurants. It was very mild, with balanced sweetness, saltiness, and umami. This was a pleasant surprise as several miso soups I have had in the past have been heavier on the salty side. It did not need to have additions of tart or acidic flavors like citrus and vinegar. The stronger umami kick and lighter soy flavors brought out the dish nicely and helped add flavor to the tofu.

For entrees, we each had a sashimi roll that we shared, with 11 on the menu to choose from a Umi Japanese special roll with 27 varieties, all of which sounded wonderful. The first sashimi roll was the O-M-G sashimi salmon with avocado, spicy salmon and cucumber. It is then topped with more sliced avocado, masago fish row, and spicy mayo. Masago is the roe of Capelin, an Atlantic and Arctic fish and cheaper than using Tobiko, one of the most prized sushi roes'. After biting into this sushi and I can agree with the OMG title as the spice on the salmon paired wonderfully with the avocado and the spicy mayo. The texture was nice, with the rice having a hint of Japanese rice wine that made for an excellent beginning.

The second selection we chose was the rainbow sashimi roll, stuffed with avocado, shrimp tempura, and cucumber. On top, it was covered with red tuna, salmon, yellowtail and eel, along with the Chef’s sauce selection. Whatever the sauce selection that was kept secret by the chef it blending the varieties of fish in perfect harmony. The shrimp tempura was also light and crispy, not soggy like we have had in the past from tempura batters.

Finally, we began our tasting of the Matthew roll which came from the Umi Japanese special roll section. It is a deep-fried California roll (rice on the outside like an Ehomaki roll ), with avocado, crab meat and cucumber all topped with the Chef's secret spicy sauce and masago fish roe. The secret spicy sauce made this roll once again. The presentation to all three of the rolls was neat and organized. The first look made the mouth water. Mixing some soy sauce with wasabi gave a good savory and spicy kick when we dipped the rolls in. All the flavors came together, with fresh ingredients and sauces.

Final notes, review basics, observations, and more pictures:

Most reviews are subjective, depending on the writer; but they should also be responsible, and respectfully written, upholding the truth, and accurately conveying the experience to the best of the writer's knowledge, even if it includes metaphors the restaurant may not like to read about. My ratings are by the stars I award (from 0 to 5). The rating is calculated on a point accumulation of six separate factors based on individual experience. They include wine and other beverage selections, plate presentation, customer service, restaurant or café ambience, food quality, and wow factor.
