Throughout 2018 P.F. Chang’s part of the parent company Centerbridge Partners headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona where Paul Fleming and Philip Chiang opened the first location is now celebrating 25 years in business. With over 200 stores spread across 41 American States (nineteen of which are in Florida), and over 100 in twenty-two countries worldwide from Canada, Mexico, all over the Middle East, South Korea, and the UK. In 2017 they opened there the first location in China. P.F. Chang’s in Tampa like the other 300 plus chains is an Asian-themed American recipe styled Chinese casual dining restaurant with an assortment of Asian beers, Japanese Sake, wines, and cocktails. Tampa now has two locations, with the main store on Westshore Plaza, and the other which my wife and I ate at in the Tampa International Airport.

The company advertises as having a ‘Farm to Wok™’ food philosophy and that their chefs hand-roll the dim sum, hand chop and slice all vegetables and meats, handcraft every sauce and wok-cook each recipe, every day in every restaurant using wholesome, fresh ingredients. I suppose ‘farm to wok’ is loosely described considering they have a Sysco truck parked out back like most restaurants to have there food delivered.  When I read about ‘farm to wok’ I thought farm to fork that specializes in getting local and mostly organic farm fresh quality ingredients. Sysco does have a small organic farm fresh branch but the question does need to be posed; is P.F. Chang’s ‘farm to wok’ part of this special branch of local organic farms or Monsanto GMO’d farms?

Topgolf ratings on Zomato:

 

Topgolf is a unique concept blending a sports venue arena, with a full bar, and an American style restaurant quality menu. There are Topgolf locations in thirty American States, three cities in England, and several in Australia. Canada, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates have locations that will be opening by 2019. The venue building is on four floors, with the main level being a sports shop plus cafeteria, and the other three levels for the golf bays. Each floor has a full-service bar, meeting rooms, private event spaces, and a kids arcade area. There is also a rooftop terrace with fire pits open when the weather is permitting. Between the three playing levels are over one hundred climate-controlled hitting bays looking out to the driving range that is the distance of a golf course par five. There are sand traps on the left or right sides, and six zigs-zagged greens down the center that are color coded based on distance, with nets and a flag in each. As you hit your golf ball aiming towards each green, a computer will register your score based on a miniature chip in each ball when it lands. 

Want more than just golf? Try late night happy hours with several cocktails and drink specials, or a full-sized menu of American style dishes from appetizers, small bites, to full dinner entrees. There are catered parties, trivia nights, lessons, and leagues for competition. If you're a high roller or need special care for your party, then you can also reserve a full suite. Finally, if you're an avid golfer you can get a Topgolf membership at several price levels to choose.

The Nepa Hut Beach Bar in Southern Saint Petersburg is the last bar before the bridge. A Nipa hut, also known as a Payag, Kamalig, or Bahay Kubo, is a type of stilt house indigenous to the cultures and islands of the Philippines. This description fits the Nepa Hut beach bar at the Magnuson Hotel Marina Cove perfectly. Go past the lobby and through the Periscope Restaurant, continue outside around the outdoor pools and to the man-made beach sitting next to the Tampa Bay. On that sandy area is the tiki style Nepa Bar situated on stilts with the bar on the second floor. 

With nearly panoramic views of the bay and the Sunshine Skyway Bridge connecting the peninsula to the rest of the state you have a choice to sit on a patio that circles the hut, or inside and away from the sun on stools around the bar. You can play a game of darts, indulge in a video golf game, watch sports on one of the four TVs on each corner, or just sit and watch the happenings of the bay while you sip on a tropical cocktail.

My flight landed for a layover at Boston Logan Airport on Saint Patrick’s Day and I thought how perfect to be in the US City with tons of Irish heritage on this Irish day. The day before arriving I had published a recipe on a vegetable blend titled The Irish Flag Vegetable Medley to celebrate patriotism and history of Ireland. My wife recommended I find a bar and drink a green beer to celebrate. I searched and searched, but surprisingly there were few bars at the terminal, and none had the green beer special. I decided to enjoy a St. Patrick’s Day lunch at Lucky’s Lounge,  part of the Lyon’s Group which owns 19+ Restaurants to include the two Lucky’s locations, the first being downtown, and the second here at the airport.

500 years of history come to life in St. Petersburg's Jungle Prada neighborhood and for the Jungle Prada Tavern. The building sits next to the Jungle Prada park and the landing site of Pánfilo de Narváez and the Tocobaga Indian village. Today that site is owned by the Anderson family of Discover Florida Tours. The building is made with Spanish-style architecture and is nearly 100 years old, being home during the prohibition era to a jazz club called the Gangplank, and was rumored to be partially owned by the Chicago gangster Al Capone. The Jungle Prada Tavern opened in 2015, with prior occupants like the Black Palm restaurant. The tavern is like a watering hole to the locals as there are few to no other bars or restaurants in the surrounding area. Jungle Prada Tavern is uniquely located not only to be next to the historical Spanish Conquistador landing site but also a terminal for the Hubbard’s Marina Water Taxi, which takes you across the Boca Ciega Bay to John’s Pass on Treasure Island.

My wife and I had just finished the tour of the Tocobaga Indian heritage site and popped into the Jungle Prada Tavern for lunch. The space was very large with side and back rooms filled with pool tables, lots of flat screen televisions, and board games with lots of tables available to play them. We sat at the copper U-shaped bar, reviewing their cocktail, wine, and beer list. They have 32 beers on tap and a unique cocktail list with names dedicated to the heritage site and local Tampa lore.

The Jungle Prada site and Anderson/Narváez mound is a family owned historic site in St. Petersburg, Florida, and is only available to see by guided tour. You can read more on their website Discover Florida Tours. This historical landmark celebrates the heritage of Native Americans with wondrous pieces of archeology from the Tocobaga Indian tribe and village. You will also learn about the stories of the Spanish Conquistadors, enjoy the sights and smells of the botanical garden full of native plants used by the Tocobaga, plus views of the Boca Ciega Bay and its history. There are over 50 peacocks and peahens that reside at the Jungle Prada site and are just as at home as the Anderson family that runs it. These free roaming birds steal the show with their mating calls and normal rituals.
