Misha Winery

Cromwell, Central Otago
New Zealand
The High Note
New Zealand, the land of wonders from the North Island to the South; The location for the filming of the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movies, spectacular mountains and glaciers, volcanic parks, and most of all wine. Home to some unique Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc’s, just a small drive outside of Christchurch you have Misha Vineyards, up until six months ago, I had never heard of, but am paying closer attention to now.

From vineyards home page:
We’re on a wonderful journey in the most spectacular part of New Zealand and we want to share some of this excitement with you. When we started this adventure our objective was to create something really special and our motto was, and will always be, “no compromises.”

Main review:
Pinot Noir can be hit or miss, depending on what style you like to drink. Some prefer the Burgundy style, while others prefer Oregon, or California, and then there is New Zealand. Personally, I have been a big fan of Pinot’s from Willamette Valley in Oregon, and every time I tried a New Zealand red, I did not enjoy it, that is until I tasted The High Note. This wine reminds me of the stronger characteristics in an Oregon wine, with a few subtle features of Burgundy, so essentially you are getting the best of both worlds. Either way, the High Note through Misha Vineyards is the perfect jump off point into other New Zealand wines, and when I visit Christchurch in August 2014, I hope I can get down to their vineyards for a tour.

This or these wines remind me of:
Gentle, sweet fruit and spice with all things nice. The High Note Pinot Noir reminds me of Row11, a pinot from Santa Maria, Central Coast, in California, which has the same characteristics, as well as Witness Tree from Willamette Oregon. Worth the buy.

Palette Experience:
The High Note Pinot Noir
“This Pinot Noir greets you with lifted aromas of liquorice, spice and dark cherry along with a more delicate perfume of white musk and moonflower.
The palate is gentle, has lingering sweet fruit freshness, but still finishes with a flinty seriousness”
