Winemaker Lynn Watanabe of the Oakville Winery in Napa, California, part of the Ghost Block family of wines

I discovered Oakville Wines when I was a member of the Napa Wine Company (now Ghost Block), and through them became a fan of Ghost Block, which is part of the bonded winery portfolio that includes Oakville Winery. In 1877 the Oakville Winery became the 9th bonded winery in California and the Cabernet is a top-notch and true cult wine that you can enjoy for years to come. The best stories are the true stories according to the Oakville motto. Today they are the only single-digit bonded winery still in existence in California.

The original Oakville Winery was built and established in 1877 as Brun & Chaix, Oakville Winery. It was the 9th bonded winery in California. In 1993 when we purchased the winery and surrounding vineyards, it was sold to us as the Oakville Winery. Today we continue it’s Napa heritage offering Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel from our family-owned, Oakville Estate vineyard. As both the growers and producers of these fine wines, we have farmed this vineyard organically since 1993. The Company is committed to growing grapes without the use of chemicals. Certified by the California Certified Organic Farmers, Bonded Winery #9 uses organic vineyard /vineyards.

Oakville Winery / Cabernet Tasting

If you want a Cabernet that will stand the test of time then look no further than Oakville. Not only a cult wine but also a hard to find one, with limited production amounts, which makes it even better. I was introduced to them after writing a fantastic review on Ghost Block, a winery in the Oakville portfolio. This wine has wonderful structure and balance reminding me of Hoopes Cabernet in Napa and Jonata Winery in Santa Barbara which is the sister winery to Screaming Eagle.

Wine and Grape:
Nose (Bouquet):
Palate Experience:
Cabernet
Winemaker Notes:
Ripe cherry and black currants along with an overlay of cedar. 95.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3.5% Petite Verdot, 1% Malbec
Winemaker Notes:
Medium-bodied with an elegant finish; this wine will drink well for the next 10 years.
Zinfandel
Winemaker Notes:
Oakville Zinfandel has developed a powerful structure with Black currants, wild huckleberries, cherries and a melting essence of dark chocolate emerge from this full-bodied wine
Winemaker Notes:
Sweet on the front palate and spicy on the back finishes with a note of vanilla and cracked pepper. This wine makes a great companion to almost any meal.

Final notes, review basics, and observations:

*** NOTE TO THE READER ***

Most reviews are subjective, depending on the writer; but they should also be responsible, and respectfully written, upholding the truth, and accurately conveying the experience to the best of the writer's knowledge, even if it includes metaphors the restaurant may not like to read about.

I refer to myself as an oenophile though, oenophilia is defined as “a disciplined devotion to wine, accompanying strict traditions of consumption and appreciation.” In a general sense, oenophilia also refers to the enjoyment of wine, often by a layman — which I am, and not qualified as a professional. I just enjoy drinking it, so my rating is based on enjoyment and the overall experience, not the science of an expert, and thus subjective, not objective. See the score factors outlined in the ‘about page’ on how I arrived at the rating percentage below:

California cuisine is a style of cuisine marked by an interest in fusion cuisine (integrating disparate cooking styles and ingredients) and in the use of freshly prepared local ingredients. The food is typically prepared with strong attention to presentation. Foods low in saturated fats and high in fresh vegetables and fruits with lean meats and seafood from the California coast often define the style.
