Horses and wine, not a common past time like beer and hot dogs, but for the Red Mare Winery it has its significance, since it was a gift and a way to say you can achieve your dreams, and now with Red Mare wines, it’s the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to their cabernet.
I was first introduced to Red Mare Wines 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon through my membership at the Cult Wine Central Tasting Room Club of the Napa Wine Company, (now Ghost Block). After working for four years as assistant winemaker at Paradigm for Heidi Barrett, Anne Vawter opened her winemaking consultancy. Shortly after, she began her own venture with Partner Jim Striegel - Red Mare Wines. She is an avid horsewoman, naming her wine label in honor of her red mare, Paradigm, who was a bonus given to her during her time at Paradigm Winery. The inaugural release of Red Mare Cabernet Sauvignon was with the 2007 vintage, and it sold out in two months. In addition to her Cabernet Sauvignon, Anne also produces a Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc and added a Sonoma Chardonnay in the 2011 vintage.
Red Mare Wines / Wine Tasting |
Red Mare Wines sources fruit from very small vineyards throughout the Napa Valley, from a cool enclave of the Carneros to a hilltop in Coombsville, and northward on the Valley floor in Oakville, Rutherford an St. Helena. The 2011 Chardonnay is from the Russian River Valley of Sonoma.
Cabernet in St Helena Appellation:
Fish Vineyard: This vineyard is a small 2-acre vineyard north of St. Helena on the Western hills. Farmed by Kendall Smith, this vineyard produces small berries with concentrated flavors.
Crocker Vineyard: Red Mare gets fruit from the Crocker Vineyard of Crocker & Starr fame. This vineyard sits on a small plateau of gravelly loam soils in the center of Napa Valley just south of St. Helena.

Winemaker Notes:
This wine expresses beautiful ripe cherries and fresh raspberries. There are lovely layers of chocolate, cassis bud, clove and vanilla on the nose.
|
Winemaker Notes:
In the mouth, this wine is supple, with a delicate center. Tannins are medium-grained and lead gently to a lengthy finish. A strong but balanced acidity pulls all these elements together, making this wine a perfect companion with a variety of foods.

Final notes, review basics, and observations:
*** NOTE TO THE READER ***
Most reviews are subjective, depending on the writer; but they should also be responsible, and respectfully written, upholding the truth, and accurately conveying the experience to the best of the writer's knowledge, even if it includes metaphors the restaurant may not like to read about.

I refer to myself as an oenophile though, oenophilia is defined as “a disciplined devotion to wine, accompanying strict traditions of consumption and appreciation.” In a general sense, oenophilia also refers to the enjoyment of wine, often by a layman — which I am, and not qualified as a professional. I just enjoy drinking it, so my rating is based on enjoyment and the overall experience, not the science of an expert, and thus subjective, not objective. See the score factors outlined in the ‘about page’ on how I arrived at the rating percentage below:

California cuisine is a style of cuisine marked by an interest in fusion cuisine (integrating disparate cooking styles and ingredients) and in the use of freshly prepared local ingredients. The food is typically prepared with strong attention to presentation. Foods low in saturated fats and high in fresh vegetables and fruits with lean meats and seafood from the California coast often define the style.
