Château or Vineyard Owner + Winemaker:
Barry Switzer
The Switzer Family Vineyards was founded by former Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer, who led the Sooners to national titles in 1974, 1975 and 1985, and was honored with the NCFAA Award - Barry Switzer honored at CFB Awards.
Barry Switzer is most notably known for his career at the University of Oklahoma and Dallas Cowboys. He was active in the college and professional ranks between 1960 and 1997 and has one of the highest winning percentages of any college football coach in the history of the game. He is one of only three head coaches to win both a college football national championship and a Super Bowl. Switzer quickly made a name for himself by perfecting the wishbone offense and developing it into the most prolific rushing offense in college football history. Switzer led the Sooners to two consecutive undefeated seasons and National Championships in 1974 and 1975, and then a third National Championship in 1985. The team won or shared twelve ‘Big Eight’ Conference championships from 1973 to 1988. Switzer began coaching the Dallas Cowboys in 1994 and won Super Bowl XXX in his second season, defeating the Pittsburg Steelers on January 28, 1996. He is also a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and received the Jim Thorpe Lifetime Achievement Award.
Switzer Family Vineyards was established in, 2010, out of a mutual family adoration for fine wine. The 2007 vintage was the first release. Coach Switzer developed his wine palate in the 1990s when coaching for wine connoisseur and Dallas Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones. “Jerry wouldn’t order anything but the best,” Switzer said. “It didn’t take long to develop a better palate for the fine wine.”
In the 40s and 50s, Switzer had a humble upbringing in the rural south of Crossett, Arkansas. His father was a bootlegger and his mother was a well-read lover of literature. His unique upbringing taught him to appreciate ethnic diversity, hard work, discipline, and the arts. The influence is reflected in the wine bottle with a picture of the house he grew up in.
As a coach, he paved the way for many African American athletes by giving them an equal opportunity to prove themselves. He is considered one of the greatest recruiters in college football history because of his love of people and unique ability to communicate with people from all walks of life. Switzer credits his childhood for his entrepreneurial spirit, attention to detail, and commitment to excellence, all of which have become his trademark on and off the field.
As part of the Napa Wine Company Cult wine Central Tasting Club, (now Ghost Block), I had the opportunity to try the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon from Coach Switzer’s collection and was very impressed. The influences of Jerry Jones were present indeed.

Winemaker Notes:
This is a lush Cabernet with intense aromas of black raspberry, hazelnut, and cinnamon bark

Winemaker Notes:
In the mouth, the flavors are rich and fruit-focused. Ripe currant and blackberry integrate nicely with the toasted oak flavors. The wine has a silky texture that finishes with a long persistent aftertaste.

*** NOTE TO THE READER ***
Most reviews are subjective, depending on the writer; but they should also be responsible, and respectfully written, upholding the truth, and accurately conveying the experience to the best of the writer's knowledge, even if it includes metaphors the restaurant may not like to read about.

I refer to myself as an oenophile though, oenophilia is defined as “a disciplined devotion to wine, accompanying strict traditions of consumption and appreciation.” In a general sense, oenophilia also refers to the enjoyment of wine, often by a layman — which I am, and not qualified as a professional. I just enjoy drinking it, so my rating is based on enjoyment and the overall experience, not the science of an expert, and thus subjective, not objective. See the score factors outlined in the ‘about page’ on how I arrived at the rating percentage below:

California cuisine is a style of cuisine marked by an interest in fusion cuisine (integrating disparate cooking styles and ingredients) and in the use of freshly prepared local ingredients. The food is typically prepared with strong attention to presentation. Foods low in saturated fats and high in fresh vegetables and fruits with lean meats and seafood from the California coast often define the style.
